Poll of the Week – Which Mini Laptop Would You Buy?

Finding the Perfect Travel Companion

I have a birthday coming up and I’m gong to treat myself to a new Netbook computer. I really want a super small machine that I can carry everywhere in my bag. I want to be able to write, check email, read my RSS feeds, etc. There are a lot of things that can be done with very minimal software and web-based applications. The biggest problem that I have is the storage. A few gigs is just not enough for my needs. I want one with a real hard drive that has lots of storage. I don’t need a top notch gaming rig, but I do need all of my photos, music, and files.

It seems like there is a new Netbook announced every day. Asus EEE, MSI Wind, HP Mini Note, Dell Inspiron Mini, and on and on and on. They all look so cute, small, and fun.

I’ve looked at many in person and all of them (I think) online and I still can’t make a decision.  There are a few that made a great impression, but they all have some flaw(s) that scares me away.

Here is the most thorough blow-by-blow Netbook comparison that I’ve seen.

Cnet’s Crave has a Top 10 List comparing some of the top Netbooks in the field.

I have it narrowed down to a few contenders:

HP Mini Note

Dell Inspiron Mini

MSI Wind

Asus EEE PC 901

Asus EEE PC 1000

10 Best Off Beat Holiday Movies Ever

Spare Me 34th Street, Rudolph, and Charlie Brown Please

Christmas-Collage Well, it’s that time again; the holidays. Time for credit card bills, bulimia, annoying relatives, and yes, Christmas movies. Every year, it’s the same old stuff: Miracle on 34th Street, Bing Crosby, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, and Charlie Brown’s crappy little tree. Well I’m a little tired of all of that cliche, Winter Wonderland stuff.

I’ve decided to put together a list of my favorite off beat, quirky, dark, or just plain weird holiday movies. They all have to be of a Christmas theme and/or heavily related to the holidays.

I have to give credit where credit’s due. I received quite a bit of input from my wife and my 15 year old daughter, so I will also indicate each of their top picks.

So without further ado, let’s start the countdown.

The List of the 10 Greatest Off Beat Holiday Movies:

Reader Poll – Roadside Memorials: OK to Document?

Is it OK to Do a Photojournalism Piece on Roadside Memorials?

Did you ever see those white crosses with pictures, candles, signs, etc. on the side of the road where people have died in an automobile accident? Me too, the whole phenomenon has fascinated me for as long as I can remember.

I always want to get out and look at them, to figure it all out. Who was it? How old were they? How did it happen? Who built this memorial? So many questions and usually not many answers.
Now, I carry a camera with me just about everywhere that I go. I always try to grab shots of things that strike me as weird, funny, cool, or interesting. Some of my stuff interests people and some makes them scratch their heads.

Every time I see one of these roadside memorials, I want to get out and document the whole thing. The problem is, I’m usually either with my wife and/or daughter. Both of them think it’s creepy, inappropriate, and disrespectful. Plus, nobody ever wants to stop and wait around for me to do my thing. If I tried to go out and find these memorials, while I’m alone, I probably never would anyway.

So, here is my question: Is it OK to shoot and document these memorials or am I just a creepy freak. I really don’t want to offend or gross anybody out. Here’s your chance to put your two cents in. You may be determining a future article.
