The evolution of the internet has gone a long way from dial-up, satellite, broadband and wireless. The evolution of the phone has also gone through similar technological bounds from the invention to the world’s first phone to the development of the Smartphone. Now there are wireless hotspots in various places such as coffee shops, restaurants, hotels and businesses. But now your iPhone can also act as a wireless modem.
Tethering means using your phone’s 3G services to connect to the internet through both your PC and your notebook. The first thing you want to do is make sure that your iPhone’s software is up to date. You can do this by plugging your iPhone into your computer, opening iTunes, and selecting the “Check for Updates” option when it appears. Next, go to your iPhone’s settings menu, select General > Network > Internet Tethering or Set up Personal Hotspot. Slide the Internet Tethering option to ON.
Tethering an iPhone with a USB Cable
In order to tether through a USB, you will first want to connect your iPhone to your computer. If you use Windows, go to your Network services through the Control Panel option and select iPhone. If you are using a Mac, you must be running Mac OS X 10.5.7 or later, a pop-up window will appear saying “A New Network Interface Has Been Detected.” Select Network Preferences before configuring the network settings for your iPhone, then click apply.
Tethering an iPhone via Bluetooth Connection
There is even the option of connecting to the internet using your Bluetooth. Go to the setting menu on the iPhone, tap General > Bluetooth and then swipe the Bluetooth switch on. The next step is to use your computer’s Bluetooth menu (on Windows this can be found in the Control Panel, and with Mac it can be found in System Preferences ) in order to pair and connect the iPhone to your personal computer or notebook.
You’ll know that your phone has been successfully tethered when a blue bar appears on top of your iPhone’s screen with the message “Internet Tethering.” Be aware that your computer will still be connected to your phone’s broadband internet even if you are not actively using it. You will also be pleased to know that you will still be able to make and receive phone calls as well as send and receive text messages and any other functions while your iPhone is tethered to your computer.

In order to keep using the internet and to make sure that you don’t have to pay overage fees, make sure that your data plan can adequately accommodate your use of the internet. If you plan on regularly using your phone as a wireless modem, it’s a good idea to have at data plan of at least 1GB each month.
